The East and South East Asian car sharing market has strong national car sharing cultures and is home to dozens of strong car sharing brands. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore are powerful examples for a continuous market development. Also other markets like China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines show dynamic developments. The East and South East Asian car sharing market is complex, featuring a diverse range of business models implemented on the streets. Operators employ various strategies, such as station-based services, free-floating services, and peer-to-peer car sharing to address distinct use cases and offer distinct services. In addition, the Asian car sharing market is the largest in the world. Here are some of the top market facts from 2025:

The Japanese car sharing market

  • Market: At least 61,000 vehicles with more than 28,000 stations
  • Stakeholders: Carsharing 360 estimated approximately 30 operators in 2024, of which Times Car had the largest fleet. OEMs like Toyota, Honda, or Nissan run their own car sharing services.
  • Selected key car sharing brands: TimesCar, ORIX CarShare, Mitsui Car Shares, Toyota Share, Honda EveryGo, cariteco, Hyundai Mocean Carshare, Nissan eshare mobi, and Earthcar
  • Main business model: Station-based car sharing
  • Key message: Japan is a powerful market with around 30 car sharing brands and a focus on station-based car sharing.

The South Korean car sharing market

  • Market: Car sharing in South Korea was started around 2009 and was professionalized further in 2011 with the launch of Greencar. In 2012, the city of Seoul launched the car sharing policy „Seoul: A Sharing City,“ which supported the start of several EV car sharing projects. The program also received an award from the 62nd UITP Global Public Transport Summit.
  • Selected key car sharing brands: The largest operator is SOCAR, which also operates in Malaysia. Other key operators include G car (by Greencar), Turu Car, You Car, and Town Car.
  • Vehicles: Given the large number of vehicles in the South Korean car sharing market, the diversity of available vehicles is high. Operators such as G car, Turu Car and SOCAR each offer dozens of vehicle models. Popular models from SOCAR in 2024 included the Hyundai New Avante CN7, KIA Carnival, and Hyundai Grandeur.
  • Key message: High level of brand concentration with only few brands that are among the strongest brands on the continent.

The Taiwanese car sharing market

  • Market: The shared mobility market in Taiwan has seen significant growth and development recently. Industry sources estimate that car sharing in Taiwan is expected to continue to grow. At the beginning of 2024, experts estimated that the national fleet size exceeded 12,000 vehicles.
  • Selected key car sharing brands: iRent, GoSmart, uRiDE, WeMo RenTour, LineGo
  • Main Taiwanese car sharing hub: Taipei

The Singaporean car sharing market

  • Market: Singapore has a long history of car sharing that started in the late 1990s. Further car sharing companies followed in the early 2000s. “In June 2004, there were approximately 300 vehicles and 8,000 members serving car sharing users”. In 2025, the estimated aggregated station-based car sharing fleet size alone was at approximately 6,000 cars.
  • Selected key car sharing brands: GetGo, Tribecar and TribeShare, blueSG, Car Lite, Shariot Car Sharing and Drive lah are examples of local car sharing brands in Singapore.
  • Vehicles: The variety of vehicle brands offered by local car sharing operators is extensive, with the majority originating from Asia and Europe. Asian brands include BYD, DFSK, Daihatsu, Dongfeng, Honda, Hyundai, KIA, Lexus, Mazda, MG, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Shineray, SsangYong, Suzuki, and Toyota. European or North American brands include BMW, Bollorè, Mercedes, Opel, Renault, Skoda, Tesla, and Volkswagen.
  • Key message: The cost of owning a private car is among the highest in the world. Therefore, a powerful car sharing offer has been established since the 1990s.

  • Additional markets: Beyond key markets like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, the region has several other interesting car sharing markets. Those include China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
