AI Solutions for Car Sharing: How Corrente Tripled Damage Resolution with INVERS

Corrente tripled damage resolution with AI technology
INVERS Success Story: Challenge

Challenge

Corrente faced the challenge of maintaining the quality and integrity of its 300+ electric vehicle fleet as damages increased. Manual damage reporting and post-rental inspections were inefficient, inconsistent, and often led to costly disputes. The free-floating operator needed an automated solution with reliable insights on incidents the moment they happen to hold users accountable and maintain vehicle condition.

INVERS Success Story: Solution

Solution

Corrente extended its partnership with INVERS to implement the AI-based damage detection solution. This feature, developed in collaboration with carvaloo, allows the Italian operator to shift from manual inspections to a fully automated system that detects damages in real-time using sensor data. In the first ten months, Corrente tripled its damage resolution and improved the speed and accuracy of handling damage cases.

Company Background

Corrente is an electric free-floating car sharing service in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Launched in Bologna in 2018, it is an initiative of Trasporto Passeggeri Emilia-Romagna (TPER), one of the country’s largest public transport operators. The service uses hardware from INVERS and software from INVERS’ integration partner Playmoove. This ensures hardware and software reliably working together, while offering customers keyless access and sustainable urban mobility.

Corrente is the first car sharing service in Italy to allow one-way rentals between cities. Customers value the flexible pricing, which includes per-minute rates and daily packages as well as special discounts for TPER annual subscribers.

Today, Corrente, which also integrates its own micromobility division with e-bikes and e-mopeds, operates a car fleet of 300+ electric Volvo EX30 and serves 120,000 registered users.

Problem

Free-floating vehicles are used frequently, making them susceptible to damage and misuse. As Corrente’s user base grew, so did the number of small damages.

With hundreds of vehicles across multiple cities, ensuring transparency and accountability between users was difficult. Corrente first relied on customer reporting and manual inspections, which proved to be both inefficient and inconsistent. Without necessary data, it was impossible to accurately trace responsibility for unreported damage. This uncertainty increased maintenance costs, as damaged vehicles required longer downtime for repair, and caused higher administrative costs due to customer service disputes.

An increase in damaged vehicles directly undermined the user experience, creating a significant risk of reduced user satisfaction and churn. Corrente needed a solution to detect damages that moved beyond traditional, passive reporting and offered proactive, digital accountability instead.

Corrente uses INVERS Damage Detection

Solution

Corrente had already been using CloudBoxx since 2021. At an INVERS customer event in early 2024, the company and its software partner Playmoove were introduced to the AI damage detection solution from INVERS and carvaloo.

This solution transforms raw sensor data into actionable insights about potential damage. Connected to CloudBoxx, it uses machine learning and proprietary algorithms to analyze sensor readings. This allows the system to differentiate between a standard event like driving over a pothole and a potential damage incident such as a fender-bender. An automated incident report with a timestamp, location, and the nature of the detected event gives operators objective, verifiable proof for faster dispute resolution and repair.

We were already very satisfied with CloudBoxx’s reliability and its contribution to our service. That’s why we had no doubt that INVERS was the right partner to help us reliably detect damages.
– Luca Astolfi, Operations Manager at Corrente

Implementation

The pilot phase launched in May 2024, just two months after Corrente learned about the solution at the INVERS event. Close collaboration between the teams of Corrente, Playmoove, carvaloo and INVERS made this quick implementation possible.

Integrating INVERS Damage Detection into the Playmoove platform was straightforward. It allowed Corrente to quickly use a powerful tool directly via our platform.
– Valerio Spada, CFO and Business Relationships Management at Playmoove

Results

Within just ten months running, the solution achieved impressive results:

  • Corrente tripled its damage resolution
  • The solution identified 91% of all vehicle damages
  • Operational costs dropped thanks to earlier damage detection and less manual inspection efforts
  • User experience improved as customers now have safer, well-maintained vehicles

The solution from INVERS and carvaloo helps us to identify significantly more damages to our vehicles.
– Luca Astolfi, Operations Manager at Corrente

The solution works so well that Corrente now plans to enhance operation further by introducing automated customer notifications whenever damages are detected.

While some operators see technology as a cost, Corrente shows that the right technology, when implemented strategically, can yield substantial long-term savings.

We are proud to support Corrente with a reliable damage detection feature in close collaboration with Playmoove and carvaloo. Explore more success stories or contact INVERS to discuss how your fleet can scale with our technology.
